Top 5 Consignment Stores in Melbourne

by Top Floor Gallery Admin

Where can I sell my clothes, bags and accessories in Melbourne? Where am I going to get the most money, and fastest?

Looking for a place to sell your clothing, accessories and shoes with ease? To save you from the time and hassle of listing your unwanted items on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Depop and other online platforms, only to receive messages from time-wasting ‘buyers’, consignment stores make selling a seamless process.

Firstly, what is the difference between selling and consigning? Although a couple of the stores that will be mentioned below will buy your item for cash outright, most stores in Melbourne operate on a consignment basis - meaning, they will sell your items on your behalf, and once the item sells you will receive a payout (minus the consignment store’s cut).

Consignment fees can vary anywhere from 20%-70% depending on where you take your items - therefore it’s always good to do your research to see where you’d like to take your items. It’s also a good idea to take certain items to certain stores - for instance, higher-end designer items may be more suitable and be priced higher at specific consignment stores, while lower-priced, lower-quality items may be better suited to other stores.

It’s also important to note that consignment stores aren’t op-shops - they will not accept every item that you bring in, with each store having a process and criteria for accepting consignments, based on factors such as brand, style, condition, seasonality, popularity of the item, size, authenticity etc.

We’ve narrowed this guide down to the top 5 consignment stores in Melbourne - be sure to save this guide for future use.

1. SWOP

SWOP is currently one of the only store in Melbourne that will buy your items upfront without consigning. Although they used to run on a consignment model, they changed to a ‘buy / sell’ model in 2024. Therefore, if you’re looking for quick cash and don’t want to wait for your items to sell before money goes into your bank account, then SWOP would be your best bet.

Once you take your items in and SWOP select the items they can accept, here are your options:

50% SWOP credit (store credit to use at SWOP)
30% cash for items under $249 resale value / 40% cash for items over $249 resale value

Key points when deciding what to take to SWOP:
SWOP generally look for clothes, shoes and accessories that are:
- In-season
- Popular today (on trend in the last 12 months)
- Popular yesterday (1970s – 2000s)
- Popular tomorrow (upcoming trends)
- All genders
- All sizes

It’s also a good idea to visit SWOP in-store, online and check out their Instagram to gauge what sort of items they would be likely to accept.

2. Top Floor Gallery

Although Top Floor Gallery isn't a consignment store, with each item being individually sourced from Japan by our experienced team, the store allows for up to 20% of their inventory to be dedicated to consignments, in order to expand their in-store selection.

Top Floor Gallery offers the most competitive rates as follows:

Items priced at $999.95 and over = 25% consignment fee (you receive 75% of the sale price)

Items priced under $999.95 = 35% consignment fee (you receive 65% of the sale price)

They don’t offer a store-credit option as of yet, but may in the future.

Given the highly curated nature of the store’s selection, Top Floor Gallery are selective with the items they can accept in terms of brand, style, condition, seasonality etc.

The best way to gauge the styles Top Floor Gallery are likely to accept, we recommend browsing their online store (including sold out items), Instagram page, and of course their in-store range.

You can also check their 'brands' list on their website for the list of brands they are more likely to accept.

3. Mutual Muse

Mutual Muse is a consignment store located in Brunswick & Northcote and follows the same ‘buy upfront’ model as SWOP.

Upon reviewing their pricing and offer, you choose:
30% of the total value of your items as cash (paid via direct deposit)
50% as store credit

As you can see, Mutual Muse essentially have the same system as SWOP, however often 30% cash regardless of the resale price of the item, whereas SWOP offer 40% for items with resale value over $249

Because of Mutual Muse’ 'buy upfront' model, they are very considered in their buying - they only take what they know sells quickly.

4. Goodbyes

Goodbyes is another consignment store, with various locations around Melbourne and even interstate.

With 3 stores in Melbourne - Brunswick, Collingwood and Prahran, you can choose which store to take your items into.

Goodbyes are known to be selective, but potentially not as selective as stores like SWOP and Top Floor Gallery.

Goodbyes’ consignment fee is 50% minus GST and a 50 cent handling fee per item. As you can see, the percentage you receive is higher than SWOP and Mutual Muse (30-40%) and lower than Top Floor Gallery (65-75%). Having said this, Goodbyes have a unique model where your consigned items have a 7-week consignment period in-store.

  • 4 weeks at full price

  • 2 weeks at 30% off

  • 1 week (the final week) at 50% off

Therefore, if your item(s) doesn’t sell within the first 4 weeks, then it will be discounted.

5. Secondo

Secondo is another consignment store, with a greater focus on luxury and designer brands compared to SWOP, Goodbyes, Top Floor Gallery and Mutual Muse who don’t necessarily accept ONLY designer items.

Secondo charge a 60% consignment fee, meaning you will receive 40% of the sale price once the item sells.

If you have luxury designer items - whether it’s clothing, shoes, bags or accessories, Secondo may evaluate your items at a higher price point than the other stores, given their customer-base and location.

We could recommend taking a look at Secondo’s website to see the types of items and brands they are selling.
